What is the studio rate to record my songs/album with Ashley and Amy?
$25/hour (money back guarantee*), 4-hour minimum and 10-hour maximum per day), includes set-up, live recording/tracking/overdubs, session editing, and two mix rounds.
$20/hour for additional mixing + feedback cycle from Mix 2 onward (if needed/requested)
We’ll invoice you/your band and we accept cash, check, and Paypal/credit card due within 2 weeks of the project’s completion. Depending on project, we may request 50% upfront and remaining 50% at project's successful completion.
What kind of session should I expect?
Are you a band that craves the live performance sound?
Crosspick is a single-room studio. Bands who dig the 'live capturing of an event' sound can play all together, at the same time in the same room, and we can mic everything and get a great sound if you won't require a lot of edits after the fact. The energy from takes like these can be magical. While we can definitely do some editing and punch-ins, we'll be limited on what we can fix later, and may not be able to surgically remove stray notes or do edits like those after the fact, since there will be some unavoidable bleed across mics.
Are you a band that likes to lay down the bedrock, and then build up a song, instrument by instrument? (or a solo artist?)
There are a lot of advantages to this kind of recording, including the ability to punch-in and re-record (or edit in post-production) single instrument tracks, when you want to re-do that solo, or fix a stray note or errant drum hit. We can record drums, bass, and keys all at the same time all together, and then layer on guitars and other instruments in overdubs, which gives everybody more flexibility in dialing in the perfect performance from each player. Recording in this way allows everyone a lot more freedom to make corrections once you've got a great take that just needs minor tweaks.
In general, we pride ourselves in providing a great vibe and comfortable experience for our artists. When artists are at ease and loving what they are doing in the moments of music-making, we know they will perform their best, top-rate, performances.
What are your hours?
We are by appointment, and mostly run a weekend studio, open ~11am-9pm Saturdays and Sundays and ~6pm-10pm on Friday or other weeknight evenings, if schedules allow.
Can I pop by Crosspick Studio to check it out?
Sure! Although we can't do unannounced 'pop-overs', we'd love to schedule you a tour of the place! Get in touch with us and we'll set something up!
Where are you located?
Austin, TX, in the 78723 zip code. We’ll give you all the fun details after confirming our recording session with you.
How can I or my band prepare for my studio time?
Prioritize the songs you would like to record, in that order, and then practice! practice! practice! It would also help to ‘batch’ the songs that have the same general instrumentation set up. The more rehearsed you are, and the less “whole live takes” we do per song, the more overdubbing time we’ll have to really finish out each one.
Feel free to BYO food and drinks (alcohol is fine), but if it needs to stay cold, you'll need to bring a cooler. Y'all can also take breaks and make food runs as necessary (near to the Mueller eateries, HEB, pizza delivery, all within a 10 minute drive). There is a small bathroom/sink in the little studio, as well as filtered water/cups you can use.
What else about the physical space?
The studio is on the second floor, so there will be one set of stairs to navigate. There are a couple of sweet front/back studio decks for smoking outside or getting some fresh air or looking at birds. We also have guest wi-fi.
How does it work to get from live recordings to final mixes? How long does it take?
After your tracking session is complete, we will share the first Mix 1 batch for you or your bands’ full input via .mp3 files (via Box files and a private Soundcloud album) (~1-2 weeks)
You and your band will then listen to the rough mix (Mix 1) and will have a chance to provide collective (and agreed upon!) feedback on what you’d like to hear differently in a revised/touch-up mix (~1-2 weeks)
Once we receive your feedback on the rough mixes (Mix 1), we’ll use it to revise/touch up the mixes, and share Mix 2/”final” versions with you, in both .mp3 and .wav files (~2 weeks)
If you're happy with Mix 2/”final”, that's it, you're ready to think about whether you want to release them to the world! If you'd like to continue the mix/feedback cycle with us after Mix 2/”final”, we are happy to keep going with you until you're completely satisfied- that would fall into the $20/hour mix rates shown above.
We can make recommendations about mastering engineers, if you'd like to get your songs mastered for release.)
We have a favorite mix engineer we want to use- can we book studio time with you to record, but take the tracks to another engineer to mix?
Sure! We're happy to track your songs, and then transfer the raw files to another engineer to do the mixing. Regular studio rates apply.
We're also happy to host an engineer of your choice in our studio, so if you know someone you like working with, but they don't have a studio, you can rent ours. In these cases, one of us (either Ashley or Amy) will be on premises for the duration of your session, in case any gear issues arise or your engineer would like assistance. Regular studio rates apply.
* What's our guarantee? We want you to be happy with your experience with us. We've been doing this for a couple of years, but it's a huge field, we're still relatively novice engineers early in our career, and as such, from time to time we may make interesting choices or not have the gear or know-how that engineers with decades of experience would have. We purposefully keep our rates low for this reason. If, after hearing the final product, you feel that our services were not worth the cost, please let us know within 30 days and tell us what you think is fair. We will issue a partial to full refund, and part ways with no hard feelings. This is music, it should be fun!
